Shed vs Garmin Coach

Garmin Coach fits you to a template written by a named coach and puts it on your wrist for nothing, which is a strong offer and the right one for a lot of runners. Shed does something different: it builds the block around the days you can actually run, rewrites it when your week collapses, and answers when you ask why.

Head to head

Bold marks the decisive difference on that row, whichever side it falls.

What a template cannot do

Garmin Coach picks a plan and fits you to it. That works when your life fits the plan: three or four sessions a week on predictable days, no travel, nothing breaking.

It stops working the week you are away for nine days, or you get ill in week six, or your only long-run day moves. A template shuffles sessions inside a fixed shape. It does not go back and reconsider what weeks five through eight should now contain given that week six no longer exists.

That is the job Shed does, and it is most of what you are paying for. Sixteen weeks is four months of a real life, and the average block loses at least one week to something.

Being able to ask

A plan you cannot interrogate is a plan you follow on faith, and faith is what runs out in week nine when the sessions get hard, you are tired, and you start wondering whether any of this is right.

Asking "why is this Tuesday harder than last Tuesday" and getting an answer grounded in your own numbers is the difference between compliance and understanding. Runners who understand their block finish it.

Pick by what you need

  • Your life keeps breaking the plan. Shed. This is the single clearest reason to pay for something.
  • A time goal the template does not serve. Shed. Garmin Coach is built to get you round, not to a number.
  • You want to understand what you are doing. Shed. There is nothing to ask a template.
  • A first half or first marathon, stable schedule. Garmin Coach. It is competent, it is free, and paying for more solves a problem you do not have yet.
  • Structured intervals must be on the wrist. Garmin Coach. Shed cannot deliver to a Garmin.

Frequently asked

What does Shed do that Garmin Coach does not?
It builds the plan around the days you can actually run instead of fitting you to a template, it rewrites the weeks that follow a disruption rather than shuffling sessions inside a fixed shape, it plans on your sleep and HRV rather than only your running, and you can ask it questions.
Is Garmin Coach good enough for a marathon?
For a first marathon where the goal is to finish, yes. It will get you there. Where it thins out is a time goal that needs the block shaped around it, and any block that has to survive real disruption.
Can I use Shed with a Garmin watch?
Yes, for reading. Your Garmin runs flow into Shed through Apple Health with splits and heart rate intact, so the coaching is fully informed. What does not work is the other direction: Shed cannot put tomorrow’s intervals on the watch.
Does Garmin Coach use my HRV and sleep?
Garmin computes those and surfaces them in Body Battery and Training Readiness, but the coach plans largely off your running. Shed reads sleep, resting heart rate and HRV out of Apple Health and changes the session on them.

The short version

Shed writes the block. Every session, every pace.

You give it a race and a date. It builds the weeks around the days you can actually run, reads every run off your Apple Watch the same day, and rebuilds the week when the week falls apart. $19.99 a month. The block is written and on your phone before you decide.
