Shed and Polar

Polar watches reach Shed the same way everything else does, through Apple Health. Polar’s heart rate measurement is among the best on the wrist, which makes the data Shed receives unusually good.

What comes across

  • Runs. Distance, pace, splits, heart rate series and route.
  • Heart rate quality. Polar’s optical sensors are among the most accurate on the wrist, and with a chest strap the data is as good as it gets outside a lab. That precision matters for threshold work and for reading cardiac drift.
  • Sleep and Nightly Recharge inputs. Resting heart rate and HRV where Polar Flow writes them to Health.

Turning on Polar Flow to Apple Health

  1. 1

Open Polar Flow on your iPhone

Settings, then find the Apple Health option.

  2. 2

    Enable writing

Allow training sessions, heart rate and sleep.

  3. 3

    Grant Shed read access

Approve workouts, heart rate, resting heart rate, HRV and sleep.

If you use a chest strap

Polar chest straps produce the cleanest heart rate data available to a recreational runner, and Shed makes more use of that than most apps. Heart rate drift during a long run, and the relationship between pace and heart rate over a block, are both signals Shed reads to estimate whether your aerobic fitness is actually moving.

Optical wrist data is good enough for that. Strap data is better, particularly during intervals where wrist sensors lag on rapid changes.

Frequently asked

Does Shed work with Polar?
Yes for reading your runs and overnight data, through Apple Health via Polar Flow. No for sending workouts to the watch.
Does a Polar chest strap improve anything?
Yes, particularly for intervals where wrist optical sensors lag, and for reading cardiac drift on long runs. Shed uses both signals.
Does Polar sleep data reach Shed?
If you wear the watch overnight and Polar Flow is writing to Apple Health, yes.

Two taps to connect

If it writes to Apple Health, Shed reads it.

Grant Health access once and your runs arrive on their own, from whatever you already wear. Shed grounds your paces in what you actually ran, not one race result, and writes the block around it.
