Shed and Oura

The Oura ring is the best sleep and overnight recovery source most runners will own, and that is precisely the data Shed’s readiness layer wants. It does not record your runs, and it does not need to.

What Shed uses

  • Sleep duration and stages. Oura measures this better than a wrist device, and it is one of the strongest inputs to whether a hard session should stand.
  • Heart rate variability. Oura’s overnight HRV is measured across the whole night rather than sampled, which makes the trend cleaner than most sources.
  • Resting heart rate. Lowest overnight heart rate, which is the most stable version of this measure available outside a lab.
  • Body temperature deviation. Where it reaches Health. An early illness signal that often moves before anything else does.

Setting it up

  1. 1

Enable Apple Health in the Oura app

Under settings, find the Apple Health integration and allow writing for sleep, heart rate and HRV.

  2. 2

Keep a watch for the running

Oura does not record workouts usefully. Your Apple Watch, Garmin or COROS handles that side.

  3. 3

    Grant Shed read access

Approve sleep, heart rate variability and resting heart rate.

The pairing that works best

Oura on the finger overnight and a running watch on the wrist during the day is the strongest combination Shed can read. You get lab-adjacent sleep and HRV without wearing a watch to bed, and full run data with splits and heart rate series.

If you already wear an Apple Watch overnight, Oura adds precision rather than a new capability. Whether that precision is worth the ring is a question about you, not about Shed.

Frequently asked

Does Shed work with Oura?
Yes, through Apple Health. Oura writes sleep, HRV and resting heart rate to Health and Shed reads them into the readiness layer.
Does Shed use the Oura readiness score?
No. It reads the underlying sleep, HRV and resting heart rate and weighs them against your actual training, which the score does not know about.
Can Oura track my runs?
Not usefully. It has no GPS and is not designed for it. Use a running watch for workouts.
Oura or WHOOP for Shed?
Either works and both feed the same three signals. Oura measures sleep more precisely and is more comfortable overnight; WHOOP gives more during-day data that Shed largely does not use.

Two taps to connect

If it writes to Apple Health, Shed reads it.

Grant Health access once and your runs arrive on their own, from whatever you already wear. Shed grounds your paces in what you actually ran, not one race result, and writes the block around it.
