Shed and WHOOP

WHOOP is a recovery band, not a running watch, and that is exactly how Shed uses it. Its overnight measurements feed the readiness layer that decides whether today’s session should stand.

What Shed uses

  • Heart rate variability. Read as a multi-day trend rather than a single morning. A three day decline alongside a rising resting heart rate is the pattern that actually means something.
  • Resting heart rate. The most reliable single signal of accumulated fatigue or an illness starting. A sustained rise changes what tomorrow should be.
  • Sleep. Duration and stages. WHOOP records these more thoroughly than most devices, and consecutive short nights carry real weight in the readiness call.

Setting it up

  1. 1

Enable Apple Health in the WHOOP app

Under settings, find the Apple Health integration and allow WHOOP to write. Sleep, heart rate and HRV are the ones that matter.

  2. 2

Keep your running watch as the workout source

WHOOP has no GPS. Let your Apple Watch, Garmin or COROS write the runs, and let WHOOP write the recovery data.

  3. 3

    Grant Shed read access

Approve heart rate variability, resting heart rate and sleep alongside workouts.

Why the trend matters more than the day

Single-day HRV is noisy. It moves with a late meal, a glass of wine, when you woke up, and where you are in a menstrual cycle. Reacting to any one morning produces a plan that flails.

What carries information is direction over three to five days, read alongside resting heart rate and what you actually trained. A single low morning after a hard Saturday is expected and means nothing. Four consecutive declining mornings during an easy week means something, and that is the pattern Shed is looking for.

Frequently asked

Does Shed connect to WHOOP?
Through Apple Health, yes. WHOOP writes sleep, HRV and resting heart rate to Health and Shed reads them. There is no direct WHOOP API connection.
Does Shed use my WHOOP recovery score?
No. It reads the underlying HRV, resting heart rate and sleep, and forms its own view against your training load and your personal baselines.
Can WHOOP record my runs for Shed?
It can record the heart rate but it has no GPS, so pace and distance will be missing or estimated. Use a running watch for the runs and WHOOP for recovery.

Two taps to connect

If it writes to Apple Health, Shed reads it.

Grant Health access once and your runs arrive on their own, from whatever you already wear. Shed grounds your paces in what you actually ran, not one race result, and writes the block around it.
