Connect
Shed and Garmin
Garmin works with Shed in one direction. Your runs arrive complete, with splits and heart rate, and the coaching is fully informed by them. What does not happen is the reverse: Shed cannot put tomorrow’s intervals on your Garmin.
What does work
- Every run, complete. Distance, duration, pace, per-split pace, heart rate series and route all arrive via Garmin Connect writing to Apple Health.
- Resting heart rate and HRV. Garmin’s overnight measurements reach Shed through Health, so the morning readiness layer works normally.
- Sleep. Garmin sleep data flows through if you wear the watch overnight and have Health writing enabled.
- History. Shed backfills on first connect, so your paces are grounded in months of running rather than in a single result.
Turning on Garmin Connect to Apple Health
- 1
Open Garmin Connect on your iPhone
Not the watch, and not the web dashboard. The phone app is what writes to Health.
- 2
Find the Apple Health setting
It sits under the settings menu, usually as "Apple Health" or under Connected Apps. Garmin has moved it between versions, so search the settings if it is not where you expect.
- 3
Enable writing for Activities, Heart Rate and Sleep
Activities is the one that matters most. Heart rate and sleep unlock the readiness layer.
- 4
Grant Shed read access
Shed asks on first launch. Approve workouts, heart rate, resting heart rate, HRV and sleep.
Running the session without it on the watch
In practice most Garmin users on Shed read the session on their phone before they head out and run it either from memory or by building it once in Garmin Connect. A threshold run or an easy run needs nothing on the watch at all. Interval sessions are the ones where it costs you.
It is a genuine friction and worth being clear-eyed about. Whether it matters depends on how much of your week is structured intervals and how much is steady running.
Frequently asked
- Does Shed work with Garmin?
- For reading, yes and completely. Your runs arrive with splits, heart rate and route through Apple Health. For sending workouts to the watch, no.
- Why can Runna push to Garmin and Shed cannot?
- Runna was approved into the Garmin Connect Developer Program before applications were paused. Garmin is not currently accepting new partners and has not published a date for reopening.
- Will Shed support Garmin workout push in future?
- It is built and waiting. The integration exists in the app and is inert because the API access does not. If Garmin reopens the program it becomes a matter of turning it on.
- Do I need Garmin Connect installed?
- Yes, on your iPhone. It is what moves your runs into Apple Health, which is how Shed sees them.
Two taps to connect
If it writes to Apple Health, Shed reads it.
Grant Health access once and your runs arrive on their own, from whatever you already wear. Shed grounds your paces in what you actually ran, not one race result, and writes the block around it.
