Shed vs a human coach
A coach who watches you run, knows your history and picks up the phone the week of your race is the best coaching money buys. It costs five to fifteen times what Shed does, which is why most runners never hire one and train off a PDF instead. This is what the gap actually consists of, and where software closes it.
Head to head
Bold marks the decisive difference on that row, whichever side it falls.
| Shed | A human coach | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $19.99 a month. | Typically $100 to $300 a month. |
| Sees every run | Automatically, the day you run it. | Whatever you upload, reviewed on their schedule. |
| Available at 5:40am on a Tuesday | Yes. | No. |
| How many questions you can ask | As many as you want. It does not get tired of you. | As many as you feel comfortable taking their time with. |
| Writes your block | Yes. | Yes. |
| Watches you run | No. | Yes. Form, gait, how you look at mile 20. |
| Judgement on an injury | Conservative rules, and it tells you to see someone. | Real judgement, and a referral to a physio they trust. |
| Accountability | Notices and asks. | A person who will be disappointed in you, which works better. |
What software does that a coach usually cannot
It sees every run the day you run it, not at the weekly review. Something that goes wrong on Tuesday gets addressed on Tuesday.
It is awake at 5:40am when you are standing in the kitchen deciding whether to go, which is when most training decisions actually get made.
It costs a fifth to a fifteenth as much, which means you can have it for a whole block rather than the eight weeks you could afford.
And it does not get tired of you asking. Most people with a coach ask fewer questions than they want to, because they are conscious of the coach’s time. That reticence costs more than it looks like it does.
What a coach does that software cannot
They watch you run. Nothing in Shed sees your form break down at mile 18, or that you overstride when you get tired, or that your left arm crosses your body. That is diagnosis by eye and it has no software equivalent.
They know you. After six months a coach knows you sandbag your easy runs, that you go quiet when you are struggling, and that you always want to race the last rep. They plan around your character, not just your data.
They take responsibility. On the morning of a race a coach makes the call about the weather and the goal and whether to go out at target pace, and they own it. That is worth something on a start line that a confidence interval is not.
Frequently asked
- Is a running coach worth it?
- If you can afford $100 to $300 a month and you are chasing something specific, yes. Most runners cannot or will not, and the real comparison for them is not Shed against a coach, it is Shed against a static plan off the internet.
- What does a running coach actually cost?
- Group or template-based coaching starts around $60 to $100 a month. Individual remote coaching with regular contact is commonly $150 to $300. In-person coaching goes up from there.
- Can I use Shed alongside a coach?
- It is not designed for it and the two will disagree, which puts you in the worst position of all. If you have a coach, follow the coach. Shed is for people who do not have one.
- Will Shed tell me to stop if I am injured?
- It will back off the plan and it will tell you to see a professional. It will not diagnose you, and it should not. Pain that changes your gait or persists past a few days is a physio question, not an app question.
The short version
Shed writes the block. Every session, every pace.
You give it a race and a date. It builds the weeks around the days you can actually run, reads every run off your Apple Watch the same day, and rebuilds the week when the week falls apart. $19.99 a month. The block is written and on your phone before you decide.
