Shed and Strava
Strava can be a route into Shed, but it is rarely the best one. If the watch that fed Strava also writes to Apple Health, that path carries better data and you should use it instead.
Prefer the watch over Strava
Almost everyone using Strava got the run there from a watch: an Apple Watch, a Garmin, a COROS. That watch can write to Apple Health directly, and when it does, Shed gets the full heart rate series, the per-split pace and the route.
Going through Strava adds a hop and can lose fidelity depending on how the activity was created. It also risks the same run arriving twice, once from the watch and once from Strava, which is a reconciliation problem you do not need.
The one case where Strava is genuinely useful as a source: runs recorded with the Strava phone app itself, with no watch involved.
If you do want Strava writing to Health
- 1
Open Strava on your iPhone
Settings, then Applications, Services and Devices.
- 2
Connect Apple Health
Approve the categories it asks for. Strava writing workouts to Health is the relevant one.
- 3
Turn off duplicate sources
If your watch is already writing to Health, do not also enable Strava for workouts. Pick one.
The segment problem
Worth naming because it affects the training more than any integration detail. Strava makes it very easy to race your easy runs, and easy runs run too hard is the most common reason a block stops working.
Shed prescribes an easy range and tells you when you ran through it. That is not a criticism of Strava, which is doing exactly what it is designed to do. It is a reason the two products sit better side by side than most people expect.
Frequently asked
- Does Shed connect to Strava?
- Not directly. Strava can write your runs to Apple Health and Shed reads Health. There is no Strava OAuth connection in Shed.
- Should I use Strava or my watch as the source?
- The watch, whenever it can write to Apple Health itself. It carries better data and avoids duplicate activities.
- Does Shed post my runs to Strava?
- No. Shed does not write to Strava and has no social features.
- Will my runs appear twice?
- They can, if both your watch and Strava are writing workouts to Health. Enable one or the other, not both.
Two taps to connect
If it writes to Apple Health, Shed reads it.
Grant Health access once and your runs arrive on their own, from whatever you already wear. Shed grounds your paces in what you actually ran, not one race result, and writes the block around it.
